The AL-97 Atlas is a military labor developed by Hishii Heavy Industries for use as a frontline infantry unit. The type was introduced in 1997, but was replaced by the more advanced AL-97B Samson soon after.
Design[]
Armor and Armaments[]
The AL-97 is equipped with high-tension steel armor across its body. Its arms are not particularly well-armored in order to allow heavier armor plating on the more critical torso and leg units. This armor setup can shrug off most small-arms fire and offers significant protection for the pilots and more delicate systems. The most problematic aspect of its armor system is the glass canopy over the cockpit, which provides moderate protection from smaller weapons but is incapable of stopping anti-armor projectiles.
The standard loadout of the Atlas is a single 20mm gatling gun mounted above the right shoulder, which can be rotated out of the way when not in use. This particular weapon was initially developed for use by NATO gunship helicopters, and is capable of firing high-explosive and armor-piercing rounds. Optional smoke dischargers can be mounted to the Atlas in order to conceal its position and movements in the field.
Mechanical and Electrical Systems[]
The mechanical systems of the AL-97 are reminiscent of those of a civilian construction labor, but sufficiently upgraded to provide a boost in strength and mobility. Due to the massive size and weight of the machine, these enhanced systems are essential to the successful operation of the machine.
Like the mechanical systems, the electronic features of the Atlas are very straightforward and basic, compared to later military labors. However, they are more advanced than construction labors of the day, and the on-board computer was able to assist the pilot with targeting and control. While the machine could be operated by a single pilot, there is a second seat for another crew member to act as a copilot, weapons officer, or other role.
Operational History[]
In the Original Animated Timeline, several AL-97 Atlas labors were utilized by radical military forces in the occupation of Tokyo. Atlases operated by JGSDF radicals were used to subdue police elements that threatened their operations. Following these events, the Atlas remained in service with the JGSDF until the introduction of more advanced units caused the machine to become obsolete.
