The ASUKA-SSL96 is a first generation construction labor manufactured by Shinohara Heavy Industries. Released in October, it would then go on to be modified for police use. When the Special Vehicles Section 2 was newly established, it was delivered in the form of "for the time being".
Design and Development[]
The Asuka had a prototype with the name "Asuka-SSL95", though soon after it was released, problems with the auto balancer became apparent. There were a series of falling accidents, discontinuing sales in a matter of months. Shinohara recovered the market circulation, modified it at the Hachioji factory, and released it as "Asuka SSL96", but it was completely defeated in terms of sales by the Tyrant 2000, which was released during that time. As a result, Shinohara delivered a modified machine as Japan's first "Patlabor" to the Special Vehicles Section 2 of the Metropolitan Police Department, with the new designation of "Asuka-MPL-96". The performance is almost the same as the normal SSL type, and the armor has been strengthened, but the agility has been lost.
Despite the modifications made to it, clearly It was no match for the new illegally modified labors with just the armor reinforcement, and in the end it was discontinued following the introduction of the AV-98 Ingram. The technology would so go onto be reevaluated. In particular, the precision work capability and mobility of the joint device were said to have been highly appreciated by skilled workers, with that "gene" still being used in the Shinohara Precision.
