The AV-98T Dolphin is a training use labor based off of the AV-98 Ingram. The Dolphin contains all of the Ingram's advanced propulsion and sensor equipment, but lacks much of its armor and weaponry in order to minimize cost.

Design and Development[]

The AV-98T is a training labor based on the prototype of the AV-98 Ingram, and thus retains many of the mechanical systems of the type. Intended primarily to train pilots on how to operate an Ingram, the Dolphin lacks some of the type's more advanced electronic systems, such as its complex camera and sensor array in the head unit. A simplified head unit with a standard camera and modified antenna is used on the Dolphin. It's head is described as a "turret type" that can rotate a total 360 degrees using an axis on the base of it's neck. However this axis cannot move vertically, so depression and elevation angles of the head aren't possible.

Armor elements on the waist and shoulders have also been simplified to reduce manufacturing cost, the lighter and simpler armor making it surprisingly more nimble than the Ingram. Tubular frame segments have been installed on the legs, hips, torso, and shoulders to facilitate easier transport, recovery, and pilot egress. During training, vehicles were seen wearing strips of cloth attached to the sensor unit at the back of the head and the shoulder hook to identify each vehicle. A stun stick is hung from a mounting part on the exterior of the left thigh. In mock battles, the shield is covered with a cloth skin with shock-absorbing padding (similar to bulletproof cloth for joints). The retractable cockpit seat of the Ingram has also been omitted, with the pilot fixed in a partially-exposed position.

Reception[]

The AV-98T was sufficient in combat training, and a total of four were made for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department Police Academy Okutama Branch. While very few units are available on the market, it's high price discourages civilian use, though it's resemblance to the Ingram made it suitable for film production.

On Screen[]

Seen In episode 2 of the TV series, these were used in a tournament style setting to determine who would be the pilot of the new AV-98 Ingram. Fortunately, though Kanuka Clancy won the fight at the end between her and Izumi Noa through a last-ditch move, Noa was declared the pilot of her AV-98 Ingram, whom she personally refers to as "Alphonse" due to Clancy's status as a temporary officer at the section 2 Headquarters, thus preventing her from staying, and therefore being a pilot for the Ingram. As a minor note, Shinohara Asuma was assigned to another Ingram that was acting as a backup unit, along with Isao Ohta.
