The CH-47J Chinook Kai is a heavy military transport helicopter utilized by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF). It is based on the Boeing CH-47 Chinook presently used by the real-world JGSDF. It makes notable appearances in Patlabor 2: The Movie and WXIII: Patlabor the Movie 3.
Design[]
The CH-47J is a tandem-rotor design with four turboshaft engines, paired in the front and rear, for propulsion. The addition of two engines grants the improved model overall higher performance than its predecessor, at the cost of weight and fuel consumption. The CH-47J's sponsons were lowered and connected by a large fuselage protrusion, making it appear to sit higher off the ground and making it even heavier. This extra fuselage volume allows the helicopter to carry additional fuel and cargo for increased versatility. The helicopter, like its predecessor, features an aft ramp door for loading and unloading troops and equipment. The cargo hold has room for numerous fully-equipped soldiers or light vehicles. Mounted on the belly of the CH-47J is a set of fixed hooks, for carrying outsize cargo.
The CH-47J's increased ground clearance makes room for a sensor suite to be installed underneath the cockpit. The crown jewel of the new electronics systems is the helicopter's airborne ground surveillance radar, which can be used to locate, track, and monitor ground targets even during nighttime and adverse weather conditions. For good measure, a pair of searchlights was installed under the cockpit as well, for visual operations.
