The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department Special Vehicles Division 2, Section 2 (Internally referred to as just Section 2) is a patlabor unit based out of Tokyo, Japan. This section is the primary unit in Patlabor: The Mobile Police, Mobile Police Patlabor (On Television), Patlabor: The Movie, and Patlabor 2: The Movie. In the Television Timeline, this section was equipped with the ASUKA-MPL-96 from its inception until 1998, when it would be replaced by the AV-98 Ingram. In the Original Animated Timeline, they would also be equipped with the Asuka, again followed by the Ingram, but would also see the adoption of a third model, the AV-02 Valiant, somewhere between 1999 and 2002. Section 2 is commanded by Kiichi Goto, and is made up of a varied team of police officers. In contrast to Division 1, Division 2 typically uses unorthodox strategies and methods in its operations, sometimes leading to unnecessary collateral damage, earning them the ire and distrust of some members of the public.
Notable Operations[]
- (Original Timeline) Division 2 was deployed to seize control of a nuclear missile aimed at Tokyo while also subduing the rebels who had acquired it.
- (Original Timeline) After it was discovered that a program to turn labors into automated machines of destruction was hidden in Shinohara's Hyper Operating System (HOS), members of Division 2 scrambled to discover how the program was activated. Once it was determined that high-frequency sounds caused by wind blowing through large structures initiated the program, Division 2 was secretly mobilized to destroy the Babylon Project construction site in order to prevent it from making all labors in the greater Tokyo area autonomously mobilize. While at the scene, Division 2 faced off against the AV-X0 Prototype labor, which had fallen under HOS' control.
- (Television Timeline) On Christmas Eve, 1998, Division 2 was deployed to provide backup to Division 1, which had engaged the Phantom. The division arrived too late to assist their comrades, but were able to draw out the Phantom after engaging several Military Labor Type 7B Brocken units. In a battle that left both of Division 2's primary Ingrams damaged, the Phantom was thrown into the Tokyo Bay, where it was presumed destroyed.
- (Television Timeline) After Ground Self-Defense Force exercises are interrupted by the Phantom Labor, Division 2 engaged the mysterious experimental type, but was ultimately unable to destroy or capture the type.
- (Television Timeline) At the 1999 Tokyo International Labor Show, Division 2's pilots were forced to engage the Type J-9 Griffon, which had launched a surprise attack targeting the division. Division 2 sustained heavy losses during the ensuing battle, but was able to drive off the Griffon.
- (Television Timeline) The Griffon appeared once again, this time at the "Castle Gate" in Tokyo Bay. Division 2 was deployed to combat it. Following a destructive battle, Division 2's Ingrams had sustained heavy damage and the Griffon had crashed into the sea, presumably destroyed.
- (Television Timeline) The Griffon reappeared after being assumed destroyed, drawing out Division 1. After Division 1 was incapacitated, Division 2 arrived to engage the Griffon. Another battle resulted in the capture of the Griffon's pilot, Bud Rennard, effectively ending the Griffon project.
