Patlabor Wiki

The HL-96 "Tyrant 2000" is a heavy civil engineering labor that appears as a standard labor in any work medium. It looks like a bulldozer walking on two legs and has working arms, so it can hardly be called a humanoid robot. What it lacks in speed and mobility, it makes up for in strength and power. It was released the year after the defective Asuka 95 and achieved record sales. Hishii, who entered the labor industry later than Shinohara, solidified it's position.

Design & Development[]

A noticeable part of the Tyrant's design is the engine mounted at the rear of the labor that doubles as a counterweight. Although this seems logical at first glance, it's easy for it to lose balance just by lifting something, and the range of motion of the arm is greatly restricted. The two-legged style, which is its biggest selling point, is also extremely inconvenient, as you can't get on or off the truck without laying it on the bed of the truck.

The power system is a fuel cell that requires hydrogen, so smoking is prohibited in the equipment storage area. Although the main gas turbine engine has excellent power, there were constant complaints about the "violent'' noise. A special cooling device that takes advantage of the paramagnetic properties of liquid oxygen is used to cool the battery. There was a scene in which Ohta shot the power section with a revolver cannon, causing the coolant to leak and the surrounding area to freeze. However, liquid oxygen has an explosive oxidizing effect, and most of what actually leaked was probably the coolant from the secondary cooling system.

Overall, it can be said that it was nothing more than "Somewhere between an overly flashy power shovel and a forklift.'' However, it is still true that this machine became the best-selling machine of its generation and made the world aware of the usefulness of labors. Those who take a bird's-eye view of the history of labor in future generations will no doubt find the "dream'' behind this machine.
