The SR-70 Saturn is a labor produced by Toyohata Auto, operating under Schaft Enterprises. It was originally proposed as a patlabor, but found a market in the private security industry. The Saturn is based off of the SRX-70 prototype patlabor, carrying over many of the previous model's features.
Design & Development[]
The SR-70 is closely based off of the SRX-70, and is essentially a streamlined version of that prototype labor. The control and propulsion systems are virtually identical to those of its predecessor, but its armor design was modified to increase ease of maintenance, mobility, and ventilation.
Armaments[]
The main differences between the two labors lie in the armaments equipped by the two. The SRX-70 was equipped with two guns, a 42mm revolver cannon, and a 20mm fixed cannon in the shoulder, but carried no shield or stun stick, making it highly effective at range but less capable of close-quarters engagement. The Saturn's armaments are much more versatile.
The 42mm revolver cannon was upgraded to a 42mm automatic cannon, boasting a higher rate of fire in the same form factor. The fixed 20mm cannon was entirely removed after it was decided that this weapon system was unnecessary and acted mostly as dead weight. For close-range combat, the Saturn is equipped with a combat knife and a stun stick, stored in a newly-designed shield. These modifications to the machine's weapons loadout afforded it higher versatility and moderately improved performance
Reception[]
Initially, Toyohata marketed the SR-70 to police departments, but in the wake of the SRX-70 scandal, the police were hesitant to adopt the type. However, the Saturn found a niche market in the private security industry. Several private firms adopted the type, most notably Schaft Enterprises Japan (SEJ).
The Saturn's history of use is not wholly known due to the shadowy nature of many private security firms. However, on a few notable occasions, the type was seen operating under the Holly Security Services brand at scenes where patlabors engaged Schaft's secret prototype military labors. The Saturns are even on-record as having engaged these patlabor units in combat.
Further Development[]
The PC game Patlabor: Operation Tokyo Bay introduces a new labor model, dubbed "SR-707 Pluto", which is a direct successor to the Saturn. The Pluto is a further refinement of the SR-70 platform, featuring a revised armor, sensor and weapons layout.
