The Type-XL was an experimental highly advanced testbed unit created for Labor advancements in 2002 by Shinohara Heavy Industries, its only media appearance is in Patlabor 2: The Movie, where it is test piloted by Noa Izumi.
Design & Development[]
Mechanical Systems[]
This is a testbed simulator created for the development of the next generation labor system. Although the equipment is fixed in a factory, each module such as the head is a real system, the aim was to create an ideal interface that can handle situations that cannot be handled with the naked eye in various work environments, these are as followed:
- Underground work
- Underwater work
- Outer space work
The Type-XL is equipped with multiple cameras and sensors. Both of these cameras and sensors can move freely and can be moved over a wide range using four actuators. It is also possible to switch to a mode that only works for a specific camera, so you can adjust the mode for testing. There is also a camera attached to the back of the head that acts as a surveillance monitor. Its arms generate finer and more precise movement, specifically the manipulator fingers are systemically linked to the simulation and as a result are more precise than any current Labor. The legs have accurate leg, foot, and toe movement with actuators and dampers, shock absorbers and Dunbar sinks are included.
Electronic Systems[]
Special headgear was created for the Type-XL testbed. This headgear acts as a small computer creating three dimensional computer graphic simulations. The device communicates to the outside workers using data detection with electronic projections on the visor. The headgear is said to be similar in function to the Hannibal's headgear however the Type-XL's is much more advanced. An experimental Data glove is also used to record data into the database. Its operating system is LOS, the plan was to use it to improve the operating environment of future Labors such as the safety of civilians. The simulator interface alone is far more complex than current Labor operating systems.
Operational History[]
In the year 2002 the Type XL was tested multiple times by Noa Izumi. After the events of Patlabor 2: The Movie the status of the project is unknown.
